During the War: Greg was allied with the Death Eaters, and what ultimately pushed him towards them was the death of his girlfriend Lisa Turpin, caused by an Order member in the attack on Hogsmeade. During his time with the Death Eaters Greg was never given any super important jobs and was mostly made to guard things and do other grunt work. Fortunately, this meant he never killed nor seriously injured anyone and as a result when he was arrested at the end of the war all he got charged with were anti-government crimes and no jail time at all, besides the inital holding period. Now he holds down a job as a busboy/dishwasher at a wizarding cafe because he can't get anything else and has lost the majority of his family fortune.
